Foot trip on the Shumshu and Paramushir islands

12 days’ trip on the Shumshu and Paramushir islands.

Program:

  • Day 1 — arrival in Severokurilsk, city tour, excursions.
  • Day 2 — going to the Shumshu island to the village Baikovo (ex Japanese military station Kataoka). Visiting Japanese monuments (the tombs of the first settlers, monument to commander of the group of the first settlers Sechu Gundsy, memorial board in honour of the construction of the church), then excursion to the Japanese aerodrome of the World War 2. One can see well – preserved runways, hangars, fragments of Japanese, American and Russian planes on the aerodromes. Visiting the Japanese underground communications post. Walking to the Bolshoye lake (licensed salmon fishing is possible during spawning period).
  • Day 3 going to the Chakonchi cape. Visiting the sea animals’ rookery (seals, sea otters).
  • Day 4 — walking to the place of the Kuril landing troops (the beach of the First Kuril straight between the Kurbatova and Pochtareva capes), then to a derelict Soviet battery of the coastal defenses of the late 40s (well – preserved weapons B – 13, underground passages, cells), then to the main battle places (there are damaged Japanese tanks and armoured personnel carriers, artillery guns and defenses).
  • Day 5 — walking to aerodrome Kuzminovsky (the capitulation place of the Japanese garrison from the Shumshu island). One can find interesting things such as gas masks, helmets, flasks.
  • Day 6 — walking to the village Baikovo, going to Severokurilsk. Food replenishment for the next part of the trip. Russian baths.
  • Day 7 — walking to the upper reaches of the Ptichya river (Bird river). The tourists will see one of the most beautiful lakes of the Paramushir island – Emerald – blue lake.
  • Day 8 — crossing the mountain pass Krugozorny (if the weather permits one can visit the Bogdanovich volcano and lake Malovodnoye in its crater), then descending to the mouth of the Pereturpit river.
  • Day 9 — walking along the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk under and above lava flows where you can see beautiful sources, then walking to the Gorshkova river.
  • Day 10 — walking to the Verkhneyuryevskiye hot springs. Waves of lava flows, the cascade of pools made by mineral hot river Yuryeva in the rock will impress you greatly. Bathing in the hot springs.
  • Day 11 — ascent to the active volcano Ebeco (1156 m, three craters, a lot of fumaroles and one of the biggest fumaroles in Russia – the Big fumarole). Descending to Severokurilsk.
  • Day 12 — returning to Petropavlovsk–Kamchatsky.

Note: the trip requires good physical training, because the sea humid climate with drops in atmospheric pressure can cause some difficulties to people suffering from high blood pressure.

The trip includes: helicopter trips Petropavlovsk – the Kuril islands – Petropavlovsk, excursions according to the program, guides and interpreters’ services, necessary equipment, meal - 3 times a day, insurance.
